A team of specialists with tools built for their domain. Knowledge scattered across documents, old emails, and the people who’ve been around longest. The same loop every day: gather context, make the decision that matters, execute, check, repeat. On a good day, maybe a quarter of their time goes to the decisions. The rest is connective tissue.
I’m describing my materials science lab. You’re thinking of something else entirely.
A genomics lab runs sequencing pipelines, checks quality metrics, cross-references databases, decides what to sequence next. A law firm reviews contracts, tracks regulatory changes, maintains case knowledge across hundreds of matters and dozens of years. A DevOps team monitors infrastructure, responds to alerts, deploys code, learns from incidents that keep happening because the learning never sticks. A finance team reconciles thousands of transactions, tracks patterns, flags anomalies that no one has time to investigate properly. A startup founder runs their entire operation against twelve tools that don’t share a single piece of context.
The structure is identical. Decisions that require human judgment, surrounded by overhead that doesn’t. The ratio is wrong everywhere. And the people doing the work already know it.
What changes now
Language models can reason about domain-specific workflows. Not perfectly, not without guardrails, but well enough to connect the pieces. Read a document, extract what matters, prepare the next action, execute it, check the result against what’s known, decide whether to trust it. Each step has been automated before in isolation. What’s new is that a single system can hold enough context to run the whole loop.
This matters because the bottleneck in every knowledge-heavy organization has quietly shifted. It used to be access to information. Then it was compute. Now it’s the human overhead of stitching tools, context, and decisions together fast enough to learn from what you do. An organization that removes that overhead doesn’t just move faster. It operates differently. It sustains efforts that would otherwise compete for the same limited people.
I’ve been building this for my research lab. An autonomous agent that handles the execution loop for molecular dynamics and density functional theory. Open-source tools for the computational pipeline. A fleet of agents that manages the infrastructure itself. All of it works. All of it is limited by being one person’s side project during a PhD.
But the pattern underneath isn’t specific to science.
The shape of the thing
A superintelligent organization isn’t one that replaced its people with AI. It’s one where every tool is designed to be operated by an agent, and every agent is designed to serve the people.
What that means concretely changes by domain but the architecture doesn’t:
For a research lab, it’s simulation codes with machine-readable configuration, job schedulers that report through APIs, literature databases that return structured data, result stores that connect outputs to inputs to hypotheses. An orchestration layer that knows what the lab is working on, what’s been tried, what worked, and what to try next.
For a law firm, it’s contract databases that return structured clauses, regulatory feeds that surface changes by relevance, case memory that accumulates across matters and years. A system that knows the firm’s actual pattern library, not just its document templates.
For a DevOps team, it’s monitoring systems that explain what they see, deployment pipelines that reason about risk, incident memory that prevents the same failure twice. A system that knows a CPU spike at 3am on this server is normal but on that one means the backup job hung.
For a startup, it’s a unified context layer across the twelve tools the founder uses. Customer conversations, deployment status, financial state, market signals — connected so that decisions happen against full context instead of whatever the founder last looked at.
The implementation details change completely. The architecture doesn’t. An intelligence layer that understands the organization’s tools, context, and history. Connected to whatever the organization actually uses. Tailored to its domain. Improving continuously because every interaction teaches it something.
Why it doesn’t exist yet
Building this requires deep domain knowledge and the ability to build agent-native infrastructure. Those two things almost never coexist in the same person or team.
Domain experts don’t build production software. They understand the workflow, the failure modes, the judgment calls that matter. But they can’t encode that understanding into systems. Engineers can build the systems but don’t have the domain context to make the integrations genuinely useful. So everyone gets generic tools that automate individual steps without understanding the workflow they’re part of.
This is why a superintelligent organization can’t be bought off the shelf. The intelligence layer has to understand that a sudden energy spike in a molecular dynamics trajectory is a serious problem, but a failed convergence in a DFT calculation might just need a parameter adjustment. It has to understand that a contract clause change in a specific jurisdiction triggers a different review process. It has to understand that the startup’s churn spike last Tuesday correlates with the deployment that went out Monday, not the pricing change from last month.
Generic AI doesn’t know any of this. Domain knowledge is the moat. Not the model. Not the infrastructure. The understanding of what matters in a specific context, encoded into a system that acts on it.
What compounds
The interesting thing about this kind of system isn’t the automation. It’s the accumulation.
A new PhD student joins my lab and inherits years of context: which parameters work for which systems, which simulation approaches failed and why, which papers matter for which questions. That knowledge currently lives in senior students’ heads and leaves when they graduate. In a system like this, it persists and compounds.
The same thing applies everywhere. A new associate at a law firm inherits the firm’s actual case pattern library, not just its templates. A new engineer on a DevOps team inherits real incident knowledge, not a wiki nobody reads. A new hire at a startup inherits how the business actually operates, not a week of onboarding calls trying to compress years of context into days.
Right now, none of this happens. Every organization has institutional memory. Almost none of it is structured, searchable, or connected to the tools where the work happens. It lives in people. People leave. The knowledge leaves with them. And the next person starts over, rediscovering things the organization already learned, making mistakes it already made.
A system that captures this memory as a side effect of doing the work, and makes it available to everyone who comes after, changes the trajectory of the organization. The overhead doesn’t just shrink. It inverts. The system gets better the more it runs, the more people use it, the longer it operates.
The opportunity
The pattern is the same everywhere. The implementation is domain-specific. That’s both the difficulty and the moat.
The opportunity is to build the infrastructure pattern once and make it deployable to any domain. The same underlying architecture — persistent agents, structured memory, domain-aware orchestration, tool integration — tailored to each organization’s context and needs. Starting where the domain expertise is deepest and expanding outward because the architecture transfers even when the domain knowledge doesn’t.
I started in my lab because that’s where I work. I wrote a detailed blueprint for how to build this in a computational materials science lab, step by step, based on what actually worked and what didn’t. The specifics are materials science. The pattern generalizes.
I think this is one of the highest-leverage things to build right now. Not because AI is exciting, but because the overhead it removes is real, the knowledge it preserves is valuable, and the people doing the work in every field deserve tools that match what’s actually possible.
