What Remains Aspirational

The Drexler/Freitas/Merkle vision of general-purpose molecular manufacturing, nanofactories producing arbitrary macroscale products atom-by-atom, remains decades away at minimum. Diamond mechanosynthesis has not been experimentally demonstrated. No molecular assembler prototype exists. The path from current specialized APM to general-purpose matter compilers requires solving numerous unsolved engineering problems.

The Most Promising Near-Term Directions

  1. Silicon quantum computing (SQC pathway): The most commercially advanced APM application, with revenue and government contracts
  2. AI-accelerated molecular design: Combining AlphaFold/Baker-style protein design with molecular machine engineering

The Key Bottleneck

The fundamental challenge remains throughput. An STM can manipulate perhaps one atom per second. A nanofactory would need to coordinate trillions of operations per second. Bridging this gap, through parallelization, self-assembly, or entirely new approaches, is the central unsolved problem of the field.
